Later Start Time Summary

South Western School District
· Elementary Student Day is 7:50-2:45 and secondary student day is 8:20-3:15
· Teachers, athletic coaches, and admin were on board
· Unified front helped to convince any doubting board members or community members
· Major complaint from parents was elementary kids getting on bus so early
· Parents were able to save money on morning childcare because they now could take elem child to school on way to work or older sibling was home with younger child in the AM but had to spend money on after school child care because elementary kids got home earlier than older siblings and parents
· Transportation was not bad: bus would head to pick up elementary kids then drop them off at school then would head back to same area/neighborhoods to pick up older kids and then take them to school (neighborhood school concept helped)

Northern York County School District
· Elementary student day was 8-2:30 and secondary student day was 9-3:30
· Did not work and switched back to traditional bell schedules
· Problems were athletic practices did not start until 4pm, sitters needed b/c elem students got home before older siblings

Other Comments
· More instructional time will be missed for students unless athletic contests also start later – would probably require whole league to start school later
· The pineal gland is a small endocrine gland in the vertebrate brain. It produces melatonin, a hormone that affects the modulation of wake/sleep patterns. The pineal gland is large in children; abundant melatonin levels in children. The pineal gland shrinks at puberty. In humans it affects circadian rhythms, sleep patterns (melatonin levels increase at night).
· Biological Rhythms – Teenager bio rythms: get tired around 11:30pm and wake up around 8:30am where as adults get tired around 9:30 pm and wake up around 5:30 pm

Please note any thoughts you may have regarding a later start time for High School students.

Advantages
matches adolescent sleeping patterns
Disadvantages
scheduling

Athletic schedules

Student work schedules

Transportation

Teacher reaction

How will this effect teachers / schedules in MS and Elem?

Younger children waiting for bus in the dark

younger children home first, before older siblings are home but older siblings home with younger siblings in the AM

in the late fall, outdoor practices will have very short time to practice before dark

What would later start times look like at CVSD?
Pick up Elementary Students first and then take them to school/home followed by picking up MS/HS and taking them to school/home.

Teacher Day (8 hrs) could be better aligned to meet the educational vision/needs of the district:
  • For Example: M.S. staff could work 7:45-3:45 - which would provide time (7:45-8:30) for data, RtI, grade level, content area, team meetings/etc...
